There are many different options for achieving the perfect set of nails. Extensions come in handy when you need some super hot nails but don’t have the time to let them grow. For example, if you break a single natural nail and you need a quick fix solution. You can choose from a variety of options including gel and acrylic nails. We spoke about the differences between these two here. Gel nails are the newer of the two and are quickly gaining popularity so here is more of an exploration into this product.

Gel nails are great innovations in nail technology (the guys and gals in the white coats are good for something after all!). A nail kit for applying gel nails consists of different items such as files, buffers, tips, gel brushes, UV (Ultra Violet) light, gel cleansers, wipes and more. All of these perform three basic functions.

Shaping and Forming

Gel is generally applied in 3 layers. Files and tips can be used to shape the nail as these layers are applied. After a layer is applied, it takes about 3-4 minutes for it to cure so the whole process only takes about 20-30 minutes.

Polishing and Shaping

Once the gel nails have cured correctly, you can continue to perfect them using files and buffers. Gel nails naturally look glossy so don’t need too much buffing. A quick polish and the nails will look completely glossy. Files can be used to shape the edges of the nails, giving a smooth finish. A good idea is to create slightly longer nails than you need to give room for errors later on. This is easier than trying to extend them afterwards.

Clearing off the Gel

You can use gel wipes and cleansers to take off layers and rebuild the nails. This is necessary if you make mistakes or don’t make the initial application long enough.

The process for creating gel nails is a combination of the above 3 steps. The same rules apply to gel nails as other artificial nails including keeping them clean, disinfected and dry.

Some of the benefits of gel nails are they are easy and quick to apply. They are fast, flexible and give a natural finish. The perfect solution for those in a hurry. The gel cures naturally and mess is minimal.
