Vertical fingernail ridges start under the cuticle and extend lengthwise to the end of the nail. These are not to be confused with horizontal nail ridges (running across the nail - side to side).
The source or cause of these vertical ridges is unknown, but heredity is thought to play a role. These vertical ridges tend to become more prominent as we age. Vertical ridges themselves do not pose a health problem - although sometimes the nail does become weaker at these ridges and will cause painful nail splits.
Do NOT purchase a product that claims it can solve vertical ridges in your nails. You will be waste your time and your money and will end up being disappointed. There are some things that you can do to reduce the appearance of these vertical ridges like buffing your nails - but that's another topic and buffing comes with its own issues. A penetrating nail conditioner may help reduce the prominence of these ridges by improving the overall appearance of your nails. These conditioners work by penetrating the nail's protective coating. Dry, brittle, cracking nails are "hydrated" and this helps to dramatically reduce splits and cracks in the fingernails - especially at these points with fingernail ridges.
Please DO NOT confuse vertical ridges with horizontal ridges. A horizontal ridge could just indicate a period where you had damage to your nails or it could indicate something more serious. If your have HORIZONTAL ridges or your nail changes color, you should consider seeking out medical attention as this could indicate a potentially serious health problem.
