Temporary hair color easily washes out of the hair. Temporary color is popular because you can instantly change your hair color without committing long term.

Temporary hair color products are easy to use and ready to use without mixing.

Temporary hair color products are also called direct-acting colorants.  The color pigments are water-soluble and attach directly to hair.

They are often acidic and provide short-term coloration in normal hair. They are generally washed away after a few applications of shampoo.

Some temporary color products wash out immediately, and other semi-permanent colors wash out gradually over six to eight weeks.

Temporary colors are usually more vivid than the other types of hair dyes making it a great option for someone who wishes to change their hair color for a special event.

Temporary colors add warm tones, darken hair color or add a richness and intensify hair color. Temporary hair color is not ideal to cover grey hair. Temporary colors tend to create a yellow/orange/ red undertone to white hair.

The temporary pigment does not penetrate the hair shaft; temporary hair color leaves a film on the hair and can make hair feel thicker and shinier. Since they contain no ammonia or peroxide, they cannot penetrate the cuticle unless the hair is very damaged.

Types of Temporary colors available:

Color Shampoo: Apply to hair with gloves. Rinse out. With regular use hair become richer and highlights brighter.

Colored mousse: Apply to damp hair. Work through hair (with gloves) leave to set.

Spray-on Hairspray: Temporary highlighting sprays give color in an instant. Available in crazy colors from luminous pinks, greens, glitters etc. to create special effects.

Color Setting Lotion: Apply to sections of hair using a bowl and brush.

Hair Mascara: Run a mascara-like wand through hair to cover grays easily.

Caution: When applying temporary color to porous hair (chemically treated/ sun bleached ends). The hair cuticles of porous hair are open and may allow temporary color to penetrate the hair shaft which can cause uneven color. Generally the temporary color molecules are too large to penetrate the hair shaft, but with porous hair the molecules may enter raised cuticle scales. Porous and blonde hair may be stained by temporary color.
