Studying anatomy and physiology is a requirement to complete massage studies. In anatomy you will learn about the muscular system and nervous system, the skeletal system, Digestive system, Respiratory system, Excretory System, Endocrine System, Reproductive System , Lymphatic/Immune System. Anatomy studies include tissues and organs etc.

Your state of mind is of prime consideration while you are giving massage to someone with the objective of relieving the receiver’s body from pain and tension. This is because until and unless your mind and feelings are not pure in nature you will transmit your tension to receiver’s body. Before giving a massage you should first of all watch your vibrations. If vibrations in your hand and other parts of body are rapid because of emotional upsets you should not give massage and should postpone the schedule to some other day. Example: You should not give massage while you are yourself affected from cold or flu because you may infect the receiver body. The objective is before giving a massage to someone else’s body you should be first calm yourself. When you will have peace in your mind then you will be able to give relief through massage to other person.

Comprehensive anatomy and physiology studies are very helpful if you want to take your massage to the advanced level. Initially you are taught particular strokes, but if you really want to get in there and work those muscles, you need to know the where, what and how of the muscles and muscle groups. When you know your anatomy and physiology you can position your clients in such a way to flex or relax muscles, so that you can lengthen muscles, and release stress patterns.

It is important to locate bony landmarks and other anatomical points to confidently massage any client whether they are skinny, muscular or overweight.

A good massage therapist is well acquainted with the body’s anatomy and physiology, muscle movement and body directions, muscle construction and actions.

The most basic rule to give massage is let to your intuition and anatomy knowledge be your guide. While giving massage if you suddenly feel that you should palpate a client’s body in a particular way then you should not hesitate in doing that. You should be pure in heart and should have peace of mind while giving massage. Do not let your ego get in the way between you and your receiver. While giving a massage first locate problem areas and then try to give relief by giving proper required stroke or application of pressure to encourage muscles to let go and release tension.

Many people try to engrave their fears and tensions within themselves with the hope that these fears and tensions may remain hidden from the entire world and from themselves also but this is not the fact. Though these fears and tensions may remain hidden for a while but will surely return in the form of pains or body aches and the sufferer will not be able to predict the real problem this time.

An intelligent massage therapist can perceive lines of tension, communicate with tensions and trigger the nervous system which encourages the muscles to relax.

Learning palpation techniques begins with a firm grasp of anatomy and physiology. Practice and more practice leads to understanding and tension can be magically massaged away.
