Pedicure Health Concerns

Q: A question was posted online regarding concern over the cleanliness and sanitation of pedicures. In short the Esthetician was worried that clients would be turned off pedicures. She asked, “How do you address these concerns?” Has the media overblown the risks associated with pedicures? Please share your thoughts and perspective on this.

A: Health concerns are not unique to salons.
There are people who do not eat in

restaurants because of all the food poisoning horror stories. If you are really

concerned that people are turned off pedicures because of the risk of

infection, why not become excessive in sanitising everything

involved in the pedicure treatment and pedicure area. Use disposable

tools where possible. Insist on turning away clients who have

visible fungal infections.

It is essential that all equipment and the foot spa is thoroughly

cleaned and sanitised as it may contain bacteria called

mycobacterium fortuitum or other types of fungi.

Do not use blades/razors to remove hard and calloused skin to avoid cutting deep into the skin and causing sensitivity and infection. Be vigilant in educating staff on the seriousness and importance o f proper cleaning procedures. If you are taking rigorous care there is no need to be worried about cross contamination. Use the negative publicity as a positive for your

salon. Market your salon as the only salon that is obsessive about sanitation, using disposable tools and protecting clients. Reduce health concerns by offering a guarantee. Guarantee a safe service with sterilised equipment. This statement alone will help clients feel more confident.
