Esthetician Job Interview Guide
Repeat Business
As a Beauty Therapist you may think that a skilled and competent Beauty Therapist is the ideal trait to get a good job. Think again! Good skills, friendly, polite and punctual is expected, but the most sought after is an Esthetician (Beauty Therapist) who can contribute to the growth of the beauty salon or spa.
Business Growth
Sure the potential employee wants someone who is productive and can see as many clients as possible, but more crucial is the master Esthetician who is skilled in providing top notch salon and spa service, can sell retail and keep clients coming back for more.
Put yourself in the employer's shoes. Ask yourself, if it were my business, what qualities should I look for in a potential employee? Would I profit if she works for me and can she contribute to the development of our beauty salon?
Do not be afraid to sell yourself but do not be overconfident. Project an air that you are sure of yourself and your capabilities.
Talking about your experience and credentials is the most important part of a job interview. Most employers need people who are able to produce effective solutions and to make sensible solutions regarding the needs of a client. When a client makes a request, it is important for staff to fulfil the clients wish to ensure the spa experience meets and exceeds expectation.
Research
Make sure that you know the basics about the salon/spa. You would not want to be caught unprepared when asked about what you know about the spa that you are applying for. What type of services do they offer and which product ranges do they work with. How do your skills and experience fit in with their offerings?
Technology and Industry Development
With the advent of technology and an ever changing industry it is crucial to stay ahead with current trends and developments. Many well-paying job openings require Estheticians who are computer literate and who know how to operate different machines such as laser, microdermabrasion and micro-current. The well paid Esthetician performs an array of procedures such lash extensions, Brazilian waxing, oxygen infusion or spray tanning. To stand out as a top job applicant you want to be an expert in salon methods, innovation, trends and technology.
Communication skills
People who are able to land well-paying jobs are well spoken and well presented. Employers hire people who are able to express their thoughts efficiently through verbal communications. The spa and salon working environment attracts various personalities, therefore its necessary, to hire someone who can communicate with people from all walks of life.
Presentation & Image
First impressions count, you need to look open, honest, friendly, outgoing and create a sense of pride about your appearance. Have a lively and pleasant tone to your voice. As a Beauty Therapist, you are representing the beauty industry and it is imperative that you look the part with clear, healthy skin, full makeup, good posture and beautiful, welcoming smile. An employee wants to see that a job applicant takes pride in themselves and the work they do.
Organizational skills
No employer would like to hire somebody who is disorganized. Following procedure ensures that a salon and spa delivers consistent good results. Top salons and spas have specific methods and procedures to maintain the orderliness and achieve consistent good results and client satisfaction.
Promote your Skills and Experience
In the course of the interview, answer questions briefly and accurately. The key is to be honest. Tell them about yourself, about your strengths and what you can do for the beauty salon/spa, not the other way around. Stay positive and do not speak badly of a previous employer. If you are applying for your first job, do not let your lack of experience hinder you from gaining the advantage against more experienced applicants. What you lack in experience, you can make up for in confidence and eagerness to learn.
Wrap it up
As you near the end of the interview, make sure that all bases are covered. Now is not the time to discuss or even ask about the salary and the benefits that you will receive once employed. There is ample time for that once you do get the position and you are discussing the job offer. Wrap things up by summarizing your strengths and pointing out your positive traits. Finally, as you end the interview, make sure to thank the interviewer for his or her time and leave a positive impression.
