Aromatherapy is a branch of herbal medicine that

uses the medicinal properties of the essential oils of

plants and herbs as a healing tool. Aromatherapy massage is massage therapy but with highly concentrated plant oils, called essential oils, added to the

massage oil or lotion. These oils are the concentrated

essences taken from the flowers, fruit, seeds, leaves

and bark of certain plants. In aromatherapy

massage, essential oils are usually

mixed with a carrier oil like sweet almond, apricot kernel, or grapeseed oil. A relaxing aromatherapy massage, for instance, might have lavender or bergamot, while a
massage for sore muscles might include peppermint and eucalyptus.

An aromatherapy consultation begins with a full health history, taking into account factors such as lifestyle, diet, stress levels and allergies. Essential oils are blended

for each particular client according to symptoms, health history, as appropriate to the individual. An hour massage with essential oils is usually relaxing, as gently massage techniques are used, rather than deep tissue techniques.

Effleurage is the most useful movement in Aromatherapy massage. It is a series of gentle, soothing stokes, which enable the essential oils to penetrate the body, causing relaxation and calm throughout. Use your whole hands, not just your fingers, in strokes that can be long or short, firm or gentle. Muscles will be relaxed and nerve endings soothed, stress and tension relieved and circulation increased. Keep your hands relaxed but firm in this movement.

Petrissage is like gently kneading dough. Each movement should be slow and careful, never causing pain. These movements are often helpful on fatty areas and on backs. They can relax the muscles, increase circulation, aid the release of trapped toxins and help lymphatic flow. Use slight pressure on your thumbs in this movement.

Known as the "sensual science," aromatherapy massage relies upon the combination of aromatic oils and the nurturing, relaxing powers of touch. Essential oils are absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin. An aromatherapist may blend oils for the client for home-use. Depending on the condition being treated, the method of using the essential oil may include steam inhalation by bath or compress, topical application or inhalation directly from the bottle or an atomiser. Aromatherapy should not be confused with fragrances or perfume oils. Fragrances are often made from chemicals, and lack the therapeutic properties of essential oils.

Aromatherapy is commonly used as a stress-management treatment and aromatherapy massage is used to promote relaxation. Aromatherapy is said to strengthen the entire body and support the body in its own healing process. Aromatherapy is beneficial in encouraging a healthy immune system to fight infection.
