The origin of massage with hot stones is unknown. Most likely it is rooted in ancient Nepal, Tibet or western China, where people attributed a mysterious, special and spiritual healing power to stones.

The LaStone massage combines classic massage technique with the healing knowledge of Northern American Hopi Indians. This type of massage was revived and developed by Mary Nelson, the founder of LaStone Therapy. LaStone Therapy uses black basalt (lava) stones and white marble stones.

The Basalt stones are heated in water to 122° Fahrenheit (50°C) while the marble rock is cooled on ice. Heated stones are placed on specific points along the spine, in the palms of hands, on the belly, and even between the toes to improve the flow of energy in the body.

Heated oils are usually part of the hot stones technique. Stones are used as tools to deliver effective tissue and muscle massage at a pressure level comfortable to
the client. The client can request light, medium or deep pressure.

LaStone is a trademark and may be used only by authorised providers. Hot Stone Massage (not trademarked) originates in Hawaii. Massage with heated stones loosens muscles and relieves tension. The warming of the body is calming and revitalising. A Hot Stone Massage is gentle and non invasive.

For Hot Stone Massage basalt is recommended for its high density and its outstanding quality to retain heat. An electric stone heater keeps the stones at the desired temperature.
