Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant that helps combat aging. Alpha lipoic acid is a fatty acid that is found in all cells.

ALA is both water- and fat-soluble. That makes it able to penetrate skin-cell membranes at all levels to protect them from free radicals, keeping the body and its skin strong.

ALA has been called the “universal antioxidant.” Antioxidants are natural substances made up of vitamins and minerals. They have the ability to fight "free radicals" -- unstable compounds that attack human cells and damage DNA. Damaged skin cells can lead to accelerated aging in the form of wrinkles, dry skin, dark circles under eyes, dull skin, and more.

It inhibits cross-linking which is the formation of chemical bridges between proteins or other large molecules. Cross-linking contributed to the aging process by causing hardening of arteries, wrinkling of the skin and stiffening of joints.

Doctor Perricone has pioneered the use of lipoic acid for skin rejuvenation. Research suggests that alpha lipoic acid is 400 times more potent than vitamins C and E, making it a go-to ingredient for restoring a youthful, radiant complexion.
Alpha lipoic acid is often used in a skin moisturizer such as a cream, but it is effective in pill form as an anti aging skin care treatment. When taken orally, the supplement can be used to get the anti-aging benefits – such as those received from various anti-aging skin care products – and it can also be used by the body on the whole to increase health. Alpha lipoic acid as used by the body has been proven to help control blood sugar levels. For those with diabetes this is very important. The less insulin diabetics have to use, the better their quality of life. It is also believed by some researchers that alpha lipoic acid actually benefits the heart with its powerful antioxidant properties. The heart may be made “younger,” essentially, with the help of alpha lipoic acid.

Dr. Nicholas Perricone, M.D. of Yale University School of Medicine and the author of the book The Wrinkle Cure states that since "alpha lipoic acid is both fat and water soluble, it can work in each and every part of skin cells." According to Dr. Perricone, alpha lipoic acid helps with the elimination of damaged collagen resulting in erasing of wrinkles and facial scars. He also thinks that alpha lipoic acid prevents the sugar damage of protein that also prevents the premature aging and skin damage.
