Microdermabrasion helps your skin look younger, fresher, healthier, glowing and for some people, close to flawless. Microdermabrasion is one of the most popular spa treatments to give instant results to dramatically improve the skin texture and appearance.
Microdermabrasion, also known as the "power peel," is a simple, straight forward, non-invasive procedure that revitalizes the skin, reduces enlarge pores, erases fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, black heads, and reduces mild pigment irregularities (hyperpigmentation), stretch marks, age spots and dull skin.
Microdermabrasion is a gentle skin rejuvenation procedure using a special device like a sand blaster sprays tiny abrasive crystals onto the face, to buff away the outer surface layer of the skin.
If you remove or break up the stratum corneum, the skin interprets that as a mild injury and rushes to replace the broken skin cells with new and healthy ones. In the first hour after treatment, this causes mild edema (swelling) and erythema (redness). Depending on the individual, these side effects can last anywhere from an hour to two days.
The healing process brings with it newer skin cells that look and feel smoother. Some of the skin's visible imperfections, like sun damage (pigmentation), blemishes and fine lines, are removed.
As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, the results are accumulated. Multiple treatments may be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation.
The procedure is not very painful and requires no anesthetic. Microdermabrasion can be used medically for scar removal when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin, but is less effective with sunken scars. There is very little, if any, evidence that microdermabrasion stimulates collagen formation. Microdermabrasion can also be used for treatment of acne, but must be repeated periodically to be effective. Microdermabrasion should not be used on clients who have taken the medication Accutane (Isotretinion) in the previous twelve months or who have had recent chemical peels.
Different methods include mechanical abrasion from jets of zinc oxide or aluminum oxide crystals, fine organic particles, or a roughened surface. Particles are removed with a wand/hand piece through which the abrasive particles come.
Apply sunscreen after a microdermabrasion treatment and clients should be advised to stay out of the sun after the treatment.
Microdermabrasion is not recommended for sensitive skin, skin that easily reddens (called couperous), or skin with active acne breakouts.
